Alfonso Castro

December 28, 1961 — February 5, 2024

Alfonso (Fonso) Castro, 62, went home to be with the “Boss” on February 5, 2024.  He passed peacefully in his home in Bakersfield, CA, surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born on December 28, 1961, in Bakersfield, CA to Alfonso Antonio Carlos Castro and Maria Isabel (Castro) Reyes, and was raised by his Mom and Dad, Frank Dyer.

Alfonso grew up in Bakersfield, and attended Mt. Vernon Elementary, Sierra, Lincoln Jr. High, Vista East, and East Bakersfield High School.  It is there where he met several lifelong friends.

He worked as a General Foreman and Supervisor in the oilfields for over 20 years. His work history includes Maintenance Worker for the Rodeway Inn, Paint Mixer/Delivery Driver for Diefel’s Paint, and a Pipe Fabricator for Total Services.

Alfonso played the trumpet in elementary school, but later learned and enjoyed playing the harmonica with his Lee Oskar for high notes, and the Blues Bender harmonica for the lower tones. He was in the Boys Scouts and took up boxing at the Boys and Girls Club. He played in the Jack Frost Football League with the Oilers.  In High School, he ran track, and played football and basketball. He loved music and had a great selection of genres, but you could always hear him blasting oldies and country music as he pulled up in his truck. He was also a collector of antiques and was always happy to share his newest findings and photos of his patio where he put each of them in just the right spot. He also loved Harley Davidsons, eagles, and wolves.

Alfonso is survived by his son Antonio Castro (Annie Mae Lazaro); daughter, Angelina Castro; grandson Jayden Castro; his mother and queen of his life, Maria Reyes (Steve Reyes); brother: Francisco (Cisco) Castro (Sharrell Castro); sisters:  Teresa Estrada (Richard Estrada), Monica Sanchez (Ernie Sanchez), Laura Juarez (Johnny Juarez), and Marina Castro; and many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly.

He is preceded in death by his dad, Frank Dyer; brother, Antonio Castro, Sr.; daughter Alyssa Ruelas; Grandmother Maria Neri; niece Gabrielle Castro; and nephew Francisco Macias Castro.

Alfonso was full of love for everyone, especially his family. He was very helpful and had a great listening ear.  He was a true friend.  Through him, we inherited a lot more family, like his big sister, Kimmie Gurule; Mama, Nancy Burcher-Wagner; son, Johnny Ramirez, and daughter-in-law, Veronica Ramirez.  He was truly loved and will forever be missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to Franciso Castro, Sharrell Castro, and Bakersfield Community Healthcare, especially Veronica Ramirez, for taking great care of Alfonso during his last days.
