Gilbert Garcia, 86, passed away on February 27, 2016.
Gil was born to Mary and Telesforo Garcia on June 19, 1929. He resided in Bakersfield his entire life, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Dora, his wife of 67 years. Together, they raised four children.
Gil attended East Bakersfield High School where he excelled in sports including track, boxing, where he earned his golden gloves, and football where he was chosen as an All-American player. After graduation, he chose a career as a Teamster truck driver/dispatcher, working at California Motor Express for 35 years.
As an avid Dodger fan, Gil loved watching and talking baseball with family and friends. He also enjoyed hunting in his earlier years, and after retirement, he found his passion for skiing. Many winters were spent skiing down the slopes of Tahoe. Years later, after the family began to expand, Gil found his real love; spoiling his grandchildren who affectionately refer to him as "Pa".
As a wonderful man, Gil will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
Gil is survived by his wife, Dora; his children, Will Garcia, Greg Garcia, and Nancy Gonzalez. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Edna Miller. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many loved friends.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Optimal Hospice, and to Gil's caregivers at Whispering Pines Assisted Living; Chito, Luz, and Lorna for all their exceptional and loving care.
