People don’t always tell you what they really think. That’s not something you had to worry about with Guadalupe Rodriguez, fondly known to her friends and family as Lupe. Lupe always spoke her heart and came from a place of love. If you needed a good laugh, Lupe was sure to provide you with her latest chiste. If you needed to vent, she would sit with you and offer advice. She cared deeply for her family and always wanted the best for them. Born on October 22, 1942 in Sonora, Mexico, Lupe had a meager upbringing which led her to follow her mother, María de Jesús, to California in the early 1960s. She married her husband of 60 years Raul and settle in the town of Lamont together with their sons Francisco and Victor. Later the family would spend time in Nebraska and Buffalo, New York where her husband went in search of work. Lupe would later find herself back in California to be near family as one of her sons fell ill. She would spend the rest of her life in Lamont.
Lupe was a hard working and ambitious woman. She worked many years as a farm laborer, predominately on grape farms. As a member of the United Farm Workers Union, she helped fight to improve the conditions of farm laborers. Ever ambitious, Lupe was known to have an entrepreneurial side. Wether it was buying storage units to stock her many yard sells or selling clothes out of the back of her van, she was always looking for a way to provide a better life for her family.
After having raised her two older boys, Lupe was blessed in her late 30s with three more children, a daughter Analia, and two sons Raul and Luis. She would also sponsor many other members of her family for migration to the United States. It was not uncommon for her to have a packed house as she helped family members to settle in their new country. When daughter Analia was serving in the Army, Lupe helped care for her granddaughter Natalya when needed, especially during Analia’s deployment to Afghanistan.
Later in her adult life, Lupe would survive two bouts with breast cancer and would endure different afflictions with her health. Her faith in God would be her strength through all her trying times. Having known Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior from a young age, Lupe never lost her faith even right to the end. On October 15, 2022, God saw fit to open his arms and receive Lupe into his kingdom. She is survived by her husband Raul, children Victor, Analia, Raul and Luis, grandchildren Jesus, Vincent, Michael, Patricia, Adam, Natalya, Carlos, Julien, Jaime, Noah, and Anthony, and Sister Maria Luisa. She’s also survived by seven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and cousins who she cared for deeply. Lupe was preceded in death by son Francisco, mother María de Jesús, and brothers Jesus, Francisco and Claudio.
