Maria Elena “Lencha” Torres

Maria Elena Torres, 79, entered into everlasting life on November 21st, 2023 surrounded by her family at home in Shafter, California. Maria was born on August 18th, 1944 in Chupicuaro, Guanajuato, Mexico to Gregorio Perea and Elvira Guerrero.
 
When she was 19, Maria met the love of her life, Nicolas Torres. The two married and soon after traveled from Guanajuato, Mexico to California where they spent many years traveling throughout the Golden State working and seeking a place to call their own. In 1971, they moved to Shafter, California where they enjoyed countless memories for the rest of their lives and raised a beautiful family. Throughout her time as a laborer, Maria made many close friends and life long connections that she held near and dear to her heart.
 
Maria loved to cook. Her rice, mole and other authentic Mexican cuisine was unforgettable. She enjoyed knitting, often making blankets, mittens and toys for her family. Maria loved to complete puzzles with her family, especially during the holidays. Above all else, Maria adored her children: Nicolas Torres Jr., Sonia Saldaña, Jesus Torres, Rigo Torres, Wendy Torres and Ivan Torres. The character, determination, and work ethic she instilled in her children will live on for all time. Maria is survived by her children, 20 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren with one more on the way. She was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven by her parents, her husband Nicolas Torres, her sons Jesus Torres and Ivan Torres, and her grandson Ethan Torres.
 
A viewing will be held at Basham & Lara Funeral Care, 343 State Ave, Shafter, CA 93263 on Sunday, December 3rd from 4-8PM with rosary beginning at 6:30pm. Mass will be held on Monday, December 4th beginning at 1PM in St. Therese Catholic Church, 300 West Lerdo Hwy. Shafter, CA 93263 immediately followed by a burial service at Shafter Memorial Park, 18662 Sante Fe Way, Shafter, CA 93263. The family of Maria Torres would like to thank everyone for their kind words, support and prayers.
