Benina "Nina" Cordero Avendaño

Benina “Nina” Cordero Avendaño, 67, passed away at Fresno Heart and Surgical Hospital in Fresno, California on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. Nina was born on October 12, 1955 in Harlingen, Texas to Jesus and Tomasa Cordero. 

She grew up in Bakersfield, California where she attended East High School. She had a passion for farming and took pride in her work. In 1979, while employed at Belridge Farms, she met and fell in love with Jose Angel. She worked for Wonderful Citrus in the Belridge area for 44 years. She developed a special bond and loved her work family.

Nina was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and godmother. She loved her family deeply, and will forever be missed. She had a beautiful and caring heart. Nina welcomed all with open arms.

Nina is survived by her husband Jose Angel; her daughters Inez (Tony) Gonzalez, Cristina Avendaño(Rick Walton), and Monica Avendaño (Brent Lindsey);her sisters Georgia Gaeta and Maria Cordero; her grandchildren Anthony Gonzalez, Jose Angel Mendez, Haven Nicole Lindsey, Arianna Mendez, Haley Lindsey, Jesus Orozco, and Stephen Lindsey; her great-granddaughter Nina Rose Ramos; her numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Nina was preceded in death by her parents Jesus and Tomasa Cordero; her siblings Jose, Abelino, Marcela, Roberto, Jesus, Rosita, Juan, and Pablo; and her granddaughter Alexandria Nina Mendez.

A visitation will be held at Basham & Lara Funeral Care 343 State Ave, Shafter, CA 93263 at 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Wednesday, June 28, 2023. Mass of the Christian Burial at St. Therese Catholic Church 300 W. Lerdo Hwy., Shafter, CA 93263 at 10:00 AM, Thursday, June 29, 2023. Burial will follow the mass at Shafter Cemetery.
