Norman Harold Hansen

May 8, 1938 — July 8, 2023

Norman Hansen passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 8, 2023, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Norm had a farewell similar to Lou Gehrig, as he was able to reminisce and say goodbye to all friends and family as he battled. Norm was born in Clear Lake, Iowa on May 8, 1938, to Harold and Dorothea Hansen. He moved with his family to Los Angeles in 1954 and graduated from Dorsey High School in 1956. He married Sandy Hansen in 1961 and moved to El Segundo where he lived for over 40 years. Norm’s career led him to Standard Oil Refinery in El Segundo (later becoming Chevron) where he started working in various plants in Operational roles leading up to Shift Supervisor, Refinery and Environmental Shift Coordinator, and finally as an Operational Assistant. The passion for his work and relentless stories “Scoop” had are still discussed. Norm retired from Chevron in 1992 to enjoy his loves of camping in his motorhome, fishing, watching USC Football, working for Indy Car Racing Team and spending time with his family. In 1998 Norm married Judi Hansen after seeing each other at a school reunion in Iowa. Judi brought 3 more grown boys into Norm’s life Norm and Judi moved to Bakersfield in 2003, to be closer to family. Norm will miss the joys of his life…his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved watching them play sports, attending school events and making aebleskivers for them! Norm leaves behind a lasting legacy of countless loving friends living life in “an easy softer way” after almost 39 years of dedication. Norms motto of “to thine own self be true” and attending the annual “Broken Neck Trout Campout” in the Eastern Sierra mountains was also a big part of his life. Norm is survived by his wife, Judi and their sons and daughter-in-laws, Dave & Marsha Hansen and Chris & Teresa Hansen, Lance White, Troy White, Todd & Deborah White, his grandchildren, Jake, Jordyn & Noah, Jessica & Brandon, Hailey, Logan, Keely, Kiley, Shawn, Brandon, Noah his great-grandchildren, Camryn, Mason, Tatum, Amelia, Cali, Hayes, Grayson and River. Being the last of his siblings with us, “Uncle Norm” became a patriarch to many nephews, niece and their families. A celebration of life will be held on August 19, 2023, at 11:00am at Basham & Lara in Shafter, California and will be live streamed. In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made in memory of Norm Hansen to your favorite charity.
